If you could have saved 5 steamers
Author: Nitehostler

Since this is a nostalgia category, I\'m interested to see what folks would like to have seen saved in the way of steam locos. You may even pick a particular one. Try limiting it to 5 in all.
My picks (and I realize this is pretty opinionated).

1) an SP 4-8-2, the 4358, cause it had the big 16,000 gallon tender & disc main drivers. The MT\'s were good runners on the SP... I met a couple of old heads who liked \'em better than the GS types at speed.
2) a SL-SF 4100 class 2-8-2. I think these were a beautiful design & aesthetically pleasing also.
3) a Pennsy T-1. After reading that story in TRAINS some years back about how an engine crew got one of these up to 120 per, I was hooked.
4) one of the T & P 4-8-2\'s, again I\'d prefer one that had disc drivers.
5) couldn\'t forget this one even though I\'m not from the East Coast, but you\'d have to include a NYC Hudson. A really kick-ass passenger locomotive.

Pretty good list!
I\'d add an NP "Northern" - although we really have one in the SP&S 700.
Also something streamlined - especially one of the MILW 4-4-2\'s.

You want to see opinionated? Not just one NYC Hudson, but specifically,
1. 5344, the most modified and tested one
2. 5405, the first J-3
3. 5450 with the streamlining
Then throw in
4. 6000, the first Niagara
5. Any D&H 4-8-4

Now for a reply with a decidedly southern theme...

1. Louisville & Nashville M-1 2-8-4, "Big Emma"
2. Central of Georgia 4-8-4, "Big Apple" #451 - Cut up in early 60\'s. She would have been
a shoe-in for the steam program had
she survived a couple more years.
3. Southern Ts or Ts1 4-8-2
4. Southern Ms4 2-8-2
5. Southern Ps4 4-6-2 besides the one held
captive in D.C.

Well you guys are on the right track (pun intended) so far. I\'ll second:

1) An SP 4300 4-8-2 with the streamlined casting

2) A NYC 4-6-4

3) One of the Milwaukee Road 4-4-2\'s

Also:

4) A Soo Line 4000 Class 4-8-2 (for Dad)

and for something COMPLETLY Different

5) a Norther Alberta 2-10-0 - the one with the big feedwater heater.

Some of my favorites are save, and some are even running - an ATSF 2900 class and the 4449 come to mind here, and the 4449 still operates.

But if I could turn back the clock . . .

PRR T-1 (For the technology)

SP GS-4 or 5 4-8-4 (GS-5 had roller bearings, a local beast from southern California)

NYC 4-6-4 Hudson (Sheer efficiency)

CMStP&P 4-4-2 Atlantic (Great looks)

ATSF 2900 or 3776 4-8-4 (another great local beast from southern California)

Each of these is significant from a technology standpoint.

Just a couple that come to mind right away.

First of all, NP 2626, the old Timken 1111 "Four Aces". Because of the great step forward in technology that it represented and all the roads she travelled on. The guy that made sure she was cut up is certainly burning in Hell right now!

Secondly, one of those monster NP Z-5 Yellowstones. At almost 146,000 pounds of tractive effort, they were something that could truly stand up to a comparison with the UP Big Boy.

My list, not in any particular order:

1. A Southern Pacific MT4 or MT5

2. A Lackawanna 4-8-4

3. A Lehigh Valley T3 or T2b 4-8-4

4. A New York Central Hudson of the "e" subclass

5. A Missouri Pacific 4-8-4

1. B&O EM-1. Either 7600 or 7624 would do nicely.
2. PRR T-1.
3. NYC Hudson, even if Pop is rolling over in his grave at the thought of anything NYC<G>
4. Yes, one of those huge NP Yellowstones would be nice, even if we\'d have a smaller one on hand.
5. A N&W Y6-b.
Come to think of it, with items 1, 4 and 5 we could pretty much load up the entire railfan population of North America for a slow cross-country trip!

I don\'t know that I could have improved on this list. Especially on item #3.

either of the DRGW C-21(360-361) I would have loved to see them shove a cut of cars through the Black Canyon. Other than that I dont know any DRGW standard gauge steamers. ALso I would have loved to see the D&SL mallets do there thing maybe # 200 that would have been impresive to see. Chad
