Small But Powerful: Rio Grande's GP40-2's
Author: GrandeGold

The Denver & Rio Grande Western rostered a small fleet of 37 GP40-2 locomotives built between April 1972 and March 1983. 35 of them work on the Union Pacific today.

In this photo from May 25, 1989, my favorite Rio Grande train "The Railblazer," heads east up the Mapleton Bench on it's 14 hour overnight trek to Denver.

Today the 3105 can be found working locals out of Pueblo, Colorado...

I was fortunate to catch this meet at Payson, Utah in 1994. Rio Grande's Tintic Local is headed east up the Tintic Branch to the Keigley Quarry while three UP SD60's head west towards Sharp, Utah to pick up a train of coal...

Meet With Amtrak #6
Author: GrandeGold

Rio Grande GP40-2 #3116 heads up the westbound "Railblazer" train #103 at Riverton, Utah in June of 1989. Check out the eclectic combination of power with a GP40-2, a GP30, and an SD45.

Great pictures of the Grande, as always, James.

Here's the 3116 leading the EB RGZ at Wellington, UT from my only ever trip to Utah on August 27, 1982. At the time, I recall being disappointed not to have F9 5771 on the point, but happy to see the Zephyr just the same.
