In this picture, caboose 0584 is sitting in front of the Durango depot. There hasn't been any narrow gauge trackage that I know of since around the turn of the twentieth century in Pueblo.

Con,
Thanks for pointing out my error. The back of some standard gauge shots in the same envelope are marked "Pueblo 1954". I should have suspected it myself since I first visited Durango in 1961. - Tony J.

Correct you are. I found a rear shot of the crane and it's a standard gauge one.. and it has a live house steam connection hooked to it! Sorry for mixing up the gauges. Dummy me! - Tony J.

After examining the second photo again and studying it, I noticed that the trucks that are on top of that boom tender car looked to have sustained some damage. The Rio Grande suffered a big pileup in the western Pueblo yards at about the time that these pictures were taken I believe. Otto Perry took several photos of that wreck, and they have been digitized and are at the Denver Public Library, and can be viewed on the www. That wreck demolished a fairly new steel caboose, tore up some F units and piled up quite a few freight cars. It occurred when an eb freight train that was entering the yard limits, and the engineer failed to control the train's speed and subsequently rear ended another train.
