Here's #18, the e/b RGZ, climbing Soldier Summit as it makes the turn at Gilluly, UT in late 1977...the 3 F's plus the Steam-generator are pulling 7 cars on this winter day...

This was taken at Denver's Union Station in April, 1971, just before Amtrak took over. I opted to ride the UP's City of Denver to Cheyenne, and then catching UP's "Cities of Everywhere" west to Ogden, as this route was scheduled to end. Then, at the last minute, Rio Grande decided not to join Amtrak, so the SFZ continued to run across WY.

Here's a shot taken prior to the last one, as a D&RGW switcher has the honors of spotting the equipment for the run of the westbound #17...For you D&RGW fans, notice how #5761 had the point that day, not the famed #5771!- Cheers from Steve in San Diego

How many tracks in Denver Union Station at that time?

BlackWidow-

If memory serves, there were ten station tracks back in the day...this was a time when Rio Grande got to the Joint Line via Union Station and Burnham. Interesting to see a Rio Grande coal train rolling through track five or six of the station!

Hi,
Can someone enlighten me on what the third vehicle is after the AB F7. On the Green Frog DVD "CZ" this wagon or whatever features on all the DRG trains between AB?BA F7's.
Just curious. Excellent dvd by the way.

I think you are refering to the steam generator car. Maybe someone can post a photo of just it.

Rio Grand PB's #252 and 253 were both converted to steam generator cars. By the time I started watching the Zephyr in the early '80s, #253 was usually the one used, in fact I don't think I've ever seen #252, in person or in pictures. #253 lost its troublesome six-wheel PA trucks for EMD Blombergs in about 1980.
