C&O 2100 at 1/30th!
Author: 3rdswitch

While in the Chicago area on an August '72 vacation, and while visiting Pullman Jct, on the south side of the "city", during a tornado watch, it got so dark at around NOON that a setting of 1/30th of a second was required to get this shot of an eastbound C&O train headed for Michigan.

Excellent!! I had never seen a C&O C630...didn't even know they owned any w/ hi-ad trucks. Were these units restricted to certain routes? I never saw any of them on the C&O of Indiana near where I grew up.

I don't know about any restrictions, BUT, on this trip we saw most of them in and out of Chi town. I "THINK" they only had 4?

All of C&O C630s were sold to Cliff's Robe River Iron Associates in Northwest Australia. 2 of them lasted into the early 90s before being rebuilt as GE C40-8M units. To see a photo of one in service go to my webpage http://www.bensonrailphotos.com and click on the Australian Flag. Go to page 3 and find RRIA 9420. It is mistakenly labelled as a M636 (I will have my web guy fix it).

Yes--there were only 4. Alco construction numbers were 3486-01 thru 3486-04. The CRRIA numbers were 9417 thru 9420. The 9417 was involved in a head on accident in February 1979 and was scrapped. The other 3 are still operating but were extensively rebuilt by G.E. as Dash 8s in the early 1990s.

NKP was already part of N&W and we did get a few shots of N&W coming through this excellent of all Chicago Junctions.

They were fairly common on the Nothern Region (PM). But there were only four of them.
