"Railroadians of America"
Author: KeyRouteKen

One of the very early "railfan" groups in the San Francisco Bay Area, probably a lot older than NRHS, R&LHS or Cal-Nevada, was the local chapter of a National body known as the "Railroadians of America"..
In this view, taken around 1940--41 are some twenty pioneer railfans..

Some of them you may be familiar with...

If you number the SEATED folks from 1 to 16,taken from LEFT to RIGHT.. Then we have:

# 2 James Knieram
# 3 Bob Jenkin
# 4 Brian Thompson
# 5 Grahame Hardy (of V&T fame)
# 6 George Harlan

# 10 Captain Fredric Shaw
# 11 Doug Richter

# 16 Ed Mundt

Left to Right (standing):

# 1 Fred Kraft

Let me know if any of you can fill in the names of the unidentified folks in the photo.

The west coast chapter of the Railroadians folded back into the "National" (read New Jersey) in the early 1960's. The Railroadians of America itself merged into the New Jersey Midland Railroad Historical Society in 1999.

Wonder what Grahame Hardy knows that the rest don't. He's the only one smiling. I'm wondering if the picture was taken at the old German restaurant on Telegraph Hill - the Shadows?

Is this just a test or do you really not know who the rest are?

To answer your question, Sir.. The photo of the Railroadians is NOT a TEST of any kind.. The folks I listed by number, in the photo, are the ONLY ones who were identified to ME!!
Do YOU know, per chance?? If NOT, do you know someone who MIGHT ??

Last I heard, DOUG RICHTER was still living on the SF Peninsula somewhere.. He would be quite old by now.. Almost ANY train book I have ever seen has photos from Doug Richters collection.

So, if DOUG RICHTER is still living and physically able, it would be GREAT if he could come forward and identify the whole gang in that photo!

Thank You..

"Key Route Ken"...

Bob - at my first glance, the thought occurred to me, "why does everybody look like they're having so much fun?"

I note with interest that there is apparently only one somewhat obese one in the bunch!
