Nostalgia & History > Time for a Katy Break!Date: 08/06/05 18:47 Time for a Katy Break! Author: yardclerk Engines 70A and the 401B double their train together at the Katy's Turner Yard in Oklahoma City in May 1979. Both of these units were uncommon on Katy's McAlester Local.
The 72C and 78C were the regular power on this train. Yardclerk Date: 08/06/05 18:50 Re: Time for a Katy Break! Author: yardclerk The 401B's cab interior was removed to convert it into a B unit. A door was cut into the nose also.
Perhaps someone knows the original number of the 401B. Date: 08/06/05 19:29 Re: Time for a Katy Break! Author: santa-fe-steam Katy really did a number on that A unit. All glass areas covered over, number boards covered. It gives you an eerie feeling about the engine and reminds me of the F units on "Runaway Train". I was not aware that any road went to that extreme to convert an F unit. Nice, clear pictures. Thanks for posting this oddity.

As for extensive conversions don't forget that TP&W turned a B into a very accurate A (differing only, as I recall, by being a hair shorter). Date: 08/06/05 23:51 Re: Time for a Katy Break! Not a day or trip without a derailment.
