Train 546, West Vancouver
Author: loleta

- Did anyone catch Wednesday night's northbound 546 on the old BCOL? It sounded like a big one - but it just might have seemed louder than usual in the cold, still air.
- Some wooden ties are being replaced with concrete ones around mp 9.5.
- Still waiting for the long-discussed DPUs to show up around here, along with the longer trains. No sign of either yet.
- Attached is a photo of Tuesday's 546 taken somewhere around mp 6 or 7.

I saw tie and ballasting work happening at Porteau . . that's a different location than what you referred to in your photo caption (assuming MP's are marked from North Van north).

Sean:

Where exactly were you for this photo? My parents place is at MP 6.5 right near the pedestrian crossing at the end of Travers Ave. This looks to be just north of there on the corner or is this along Sunset Lane?

I was over there on Sunday and a fairly long southbound came by about 15:30. I think a northbound went out close to 16:00 but I was in the basement and couldn't tell for sure. Then about 17:00 a light engine move went north with the three untis that had come south at 15:30. Could this have been an extended 568 or 570 with 546 going north in between?

Probably a 568, they've been running a few lately.

The photo is taken at the Sharon road crossing, so it's probably closr to mp 7, maybe even a bit beyond. What you heard on Sunday was a southbound 569, then 546 went north, then 568 went north. Not a bad afternoon (except, of course, it's all CN power). I believe they run 568/569 when there come to be too many southbound cars in Lillooet for the usual daily 571 to handle: they send light engines to Lillooet to bring cars back to North Van. I tend to see 568/569 more often Friday - Sunday than earlier in the week, and sometimes on Saturday they've had 568 bring cars to Squamish, and 546 is cancelled.

569 is the northbound, 568 is the southbound. All northbounds are odd numbers, southbounds are even. 546 is an even number because it used to run out of Squamish south to North Vancouver as a turn. They never changed the train designation when they started running it out of North Vancouver. I know it's sad to see nothing but CN power but CN is running the BCOL now and they don't care what paint job the locomotives are wearing.

Meanwhile, hardly a day goes by now when I don't see, or hear of, a BCOL unit in some CN engine consist here in Toledo, Ohio.

I'm glad I got 'em when they rarely strayed from BC -- the scenery there is much better.
