Meets Monday - Canadian style
Author: thehighwayman

After seeing all the "meets Monday" material on the Western and Eastern forums, I thought it was time to show some Canadian material. The raw video of this three-train meet is almost 17 minutes long, but I managed to cut it down and show the interesting aspects. This was shot back in 2007 at Copetown, ON on the CN Dundas sub. The first train is a slow westbound. The second is an eastbound, followed a few minutes later by an eastbound road-railer. Enjoy!

Heres my contribution of a three meet between CP and SRY, taken on Monday April 11, 2011 at New Westminster, BC. On the left is CPs O Yard Job with SW1200s 1237 and 1239, the middle is a CP transfer from Coquitlam Yard, making a delivery for the O Yard to pick up and on the right an SRY transfer from Annacis Island doing some switching in the Dock Yard.

Nice video;-) A question or two, if I may?

Was it the same slow westbound freight in all three clips?

If so, was the westbound track ahead single track?

If it was, I can understand why he was going so slowly -- to wait for these two eastbound trains to get by before he switched onto it.

Regarding the road railer, wasn't that an awfully long/heavy train to be hauled by a single locomotive?

TIA,

Yep, same train!

To be honest, I am not sure where the double track ends west of Copetown ... perhaps CCMF or someone else may know.

Again, I don't know if those were loaded or empty road-railers ... and CN is known for frugality when it comes to powering a train!

Just having a look at the video, I would think that was CN 331 westbound, then 148 followed by 144 are the eastbounds.
CN 331 is grinding uphill for almost 10 miles after switching in Hamilton and coming off the Grimsby Sub.
331 is normally a pretty long train and does not get a run at the bottom of the hill because it is uphill starting out from Hamilton Yard.
You will notice that the train starts to speed up toward the end of the video being as it has crested the grade at Copetown.

CN Q148 was always an intermodal train but with the downturn in the economy, it started hauling general merchandise as seen on the rear of the train.
The general merchandise is on the front of the train more often now and from time to time, Q148 is back to solid intermodal.

CN 144/145 normally run with a single unit and about 100 trailers. Loaded or empty, this train moves along quite smartly with a single unit.

With regards to double track, the Dundas Sub is double tracked all the way from MP 0.0 at Bayview (Jct with Oakville Sub) into London, ON, at MP 78.2. The video is taken between MP 9.0 and MP 10.0.

Many thanks for filling in the gaps!
