Feb 2 (Reuters) - Replacing the Keystone XL pipeline with oil-laden freight trains from Canada may result in an average of six additional rail-related deaths per year, according to a U.S. State Department report that is adding to pressure for President Barack Obama to approve the line.

Although it excluded the runaway oil train derailment that killed 47 people in Lac Megantic, Quebec, last summer, the tragedy that first shone a critical light on the rapidly expanding trend in shipping crude by rail, the findings highlight the risks or railway transport versus pipes.

Shipping another 830,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude "would result in an estimated 49 additional injuries and six additional fatalities for the No Action rail scenarios compared to one additional injury and no fatalities" per year if Keystone XL is built, according to the report.

I worry about the pipelines breaking and contaminating large river systems and ground water,

There are maps available on the internet showing all the pipelines in the US. Considering the thousands of them and the thousands of miles they cover, and very few incidents with them, you don't have much to worry about.

The United Sates wish to control the world and all of its energy even dirty oil from
the destructive to the environment Canadian north will ensure the pipeline and
any future such lines shall be constructed.
Wonder if the populace would feel the same if we were discussing solar?

I can assure you, not all of us south of your border are interested in world energy domination. Canadian companies have their fingerprints all over this mess as well. I am truly sorry for the generations to come that will be dealing with the environmental disaster that will be caused by the tar sand mining operations in Alberta. No matter how careful it is done, it is impossible to do this type of mining without significant damage to the surrounding terrain and river systems.

At that rate, they have killed eigtht years worth in just one small Canadian town. Stay tuned , more to come.

Keep in mind that the train wreck that killed 47 at Lac-Magantic was carrying crude oil from the US (North Dakota) to a Canadian refinery. As I understand it, the Keystone XL extension is to carry Canadian tar sands oil to US Gulf Coast refineries. Keystone XL only replaces one of many transport lanes for crude oil in North America.

Pipeline to Gulf, water from Gulf to East Coast may prove to be less expensive than all rail.

There are plans to build feeder pipelines in North Dakota so that Baaken crude can be transported via the Keystone XL pipeline.
