CN New Hazelton BC siding
Author: shortlineboss

What is the name of the CN siding at New Hazelton BC? My Canadian Trackside Guide shows a siding at Moricetown (MP 22.3) and a siding at Andimaul (MP 68.1) but nothing in between. DO train crews operate without crew change between Smithers and Prince Rupert?

The crew change locations on the CN BC North line have changed several times since the line was built as the Grand Trunk Pacific.

As built, Smithers and Prince Rupert were both crew bases, with a crew change location at Pacific.

When the aluminum smelter was built at Kitimat BC in the 1950's, Terrace became a crew base, gradually replacing Prince Rupert.

Finally, in the 1990's, Smithers freight crews started running through Terrace.

The siding at New Hazelton is actually 3 miles of double track with the east switch called Fleming, and the west switch called McLeod. These days, most Smithers crews double sub to Prince Rupert instead of just running single sub (Bulkley sub) to Terrace.
