CP Locomotives

Was wondering if CP has ordered any new locomotives this year or next that anyone knows of. Rebuilds or anything. Never had much luck using the search feature here on TO...

A quote from Hunter Harrison in Railway Age, December 4, 2013: "Our focus on asset utilization has generated over 450 surplus locomotives, so we definitely will not be purchasing locomotives in 2014."

CP has just ordered another 60 GP20C-ECO units from EMD. These use recycled trucks and traction motors but are on new frames and should be considered new locomotives. This order brings the total of that model to 130.

What Harrison has said in the past is that CP will not be ordering any new six-axle units until at least 2017.

The first of the 60 GP20C-ECO's are built, painted, and under test.

Jury is out on rebuilding SD40-2's in-kind or doing more SD30C-ECO's. How existing ones make out in the coal pool some are working right now in B.C. might have an effect on that decision.

But no big new power for a while I'm afraid.

Those rebuilds are decent. Good pullers, roomy cabs, but pretty loud in there too. A/C too.

Not without their warts though, they don't seem to ride well at track speed, and the independent brake is very touchy and can't be feathered like earlier units. The AC is very nice on hot days though.
