Thanks for sharing this.

The smoking locomotive "was burping droplets of oil on the cab's window" wasn't a detail I had heard before.

The following is what the taxi driver provided to the police (extracted from an article published by the Montreal Gazette...."Lac-Mégantic: Key players in deadly series of events")

Andre Turcotte, Taxi driver

Turcotte told police he got a call to pick Harding up at 11 p.m. When he reached the train, he noticed spots of oil on Harding's arms and had to turn on his wipers because there was oil spraying from the locomotive and it splattered the windshield. There was also more smoke than normal coming from the locomotive, and Turcotte asked Harding what was wrong. Harding said "the engine's busted," but explained that the company had advised him to keep the locomotive running. Harding expressed a desire to call MMA's U.S. office again to get permission to shut things off completely.

It appears that Quebec provincial police have now seized the lead locomotive MM&A 5017:

Ray,

Just what will Sûreté du Québec do with it? The TSB Canada is the ones who should have it.

Not being a lawyer or officer of the law, my guess is as good as Jokisch's.

As a part of their investigation and after completely examining MM&A 5017 to their satisfaction and then releasing it, why would they want it back?

According to this article in today's Montreal Gazette, it is still being held on behalf of the TSB until the TSB releases their report:

Who are the auctioneers?
