Canadian Railroads > Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway photosDate: 09/22/14 22:39 Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway photos Author: Vic_Guy Here's a few photos from earlier this year from the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway on Vancouver Island. Southern Railway of BC is contracted to run the freight operations here and they use two GP9's to handle the small amount of traffic that is left. Railcars are brought over by barge once a week from Southern Railway's barge slip on Annacis island near Vancouver, BC. Passenger service on the island ended in 2011 due to poor track conditions.
1. Southbound Duncan Turn has just left the yard at Nanaimo and is making it's way to Top Shelf Feeds in Koksilah, the current southern end of the railway. February 11, 2014. 2. Same train again, this time farther south at Somenos. 3. SRY 124 returning to the yard after switching a propane dealer at the north end of Nanaimo. February 21, 2014. I know that Esquimalt is now the end of the line, because of the Victoria bridge widening, but does the occasional freight train still go as far as Esquimalt?
And Esquimalt may be booming, but I think having the Victoria station there would be a drawback to a reactivated Malahat (or "Victoria-Courtenay train") Tor in Eugene Date: 09/23/14 19:25 Re: Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway photos Author: Vic_Guy Torisgod Wrote:

The last freight train to come to Victoria was in 2010 and last passenger was 2011. It was a huge blow to the E&N's future when they announced the new bridge would not have a railway component. I have my doubts that VIA will be back anyways, but that's another conversation. Chris Medland Victoria, BC My Flickr photos |
