Does anyone know why the VIA Rail Canrail Pass was discontinued? It used to show up on the VIA Rail website.

One of the first decisions made by VIA's previous CEO Marc Laliberte was to downgrade the Canrailpass to make it next to useless. It was no longer possible to upgrade to VIA 1 (now called Business Class)or sleeping cars. In order to secure a coach seat, pass holders had to book a seat available at the lowest fare level. I believe those cheap fares were called Supersaver at the time. So there was almost no chance at last-minute trips available within the time-frame of the pass. A ticket agent at Toronto told me they sold very few of these after the downgrade, which is not surprising. I had used the Canrailpass several times and found it of good value when upgrading to VIA 1 or sleeper.
