Via Football Special
Author: Ray_Murphy

A special train for today's CFL football game left Montreal at 8 AM, bound for Toronto.

Here is the train passing through Ville St-Pierre at about 8:15 under dark and cloudy skies. It had two units and 9 cars. The last car in the train was the Glen Fraser lounge.

For freight fans, #120 to Halifax came by about a half-hour later, after it had rained. #120 had 5 units today.

The special train is too long for the wye at the Toronto Maintenance Centre. So it was taken out to Burlington to be turned. On its return it went through Long Branch GO station (approx. mile 10 of Oakville Sub.) at 14:25.

An 80 mile roundtrip......are there no other wyes in the Toronto area?

I don't believe there is anything closer other than that short wye at the Maintenance Centre. Burlington is used for turning all trains longer than about six coaches plus locomotive. As most of us know, the Canadian normally comes in down the Bala Sub. then goes out the Newmarket Sub. so it doesn't need a wye. But a few times a year there is a problem on one of the routes (usually flooding of the Don River on the southern portion of the Bala Sub.) so the train needs to be turned and off to Burlington it goes.

Guess the Football special could have done the same thing....departed west out of Union and followed the w/b Canadian’s route. Then at Doncaster......just continued east on the York Sub to the Jct with the Kingston Sub at Pickering.

Probably would have added a half hour or so to the schedule....but hay, more time to party on the special after that 20-12 Alouettes win over the Argos!
