VIA is still running on the ICR between St. Andre Jct. and Moncton, although only three round trips per week. The part of the ICR that has the severe slow orders and was threatened with abandonment was east of Bathurst, so this doesn't directly involve the route of the proposed oil trains. Not mentioned in the article, but active on the New Brunswick rumour mill, is that only loaded oil trains would travel west of Belledune. The empties would continue east to Moncton, and then turn around west to go back on the NTR. Meanwhile, a similar plan is being hatched to use the oil terminal at Pt. Tupper, on Cape Breton Island, for exporting oil. The oil infrastructure is already there, they just need to extend the track a couple miles from the existing CBNS Tupper Spur. G&W seems to be in the mood to upgrade the track west of Port Hawkesbury to accommodate this. More rumours are swirling about ballast trains this fall, although I haven't seen any confirmation from anybody on the ground yet. I'd love to see Canada reap the benefits of export oil at the Brent price. If it goes out via Cape Breton, so much the better. Folks up there could use more jobs, I'm sure.
