MLW Monday - CN 8506 Caboose Duty
Author: Ray_Murphy

These are a few more pictures from my day at the Taschereau Yard (Montreal) in June 1975.

One of the things that has changed since 1975 is the elimination of cabooses and the facilities to service them. In the Taschereau Yard, the caboose service area was adjacent to the inbound end of the receiving yard.

Picture #1 shows conventionally-trucked S-13 8506 as the switcher assigned to caboose duty that day. It is sitting on a track next to the caboose service area. One of the 3-unit hump locomotives can be seen in the background. CP's St-Luc Yard is on the other side of the trees.

Pictures #2 and #3 show the spacious and well-maintained caboose service track area. You can see In Picture #3 that CN 79258 is carrying a clear message for the carmen.

Picture #4 Shows one of CN's standard road cabooses, 79666. Compare the nice condition of this car in 1975 with what one of its brothers, CN 79750, looked like in 2012 (Picture #5).

There was one wood-sheathed caboose in the service area that day (Picture #6). These were still used in 1975 for jobs on the industrial spurs around Montreal and other local work. Picture #7 closes with a closer look at the cupola end of CN 78375.
