CN testing GE Tier 4 ES44AC's
Author: CP9300

We recently got word that CN would be testing GE's Tier 4 compliant ES44AC's in mainline service. One of these, GECX 2036, made its way into Edmonton earlier this week on Q111. It came off in Edmonton and CN's Walker Shop gave it a once over, load testing and having a look under the hood. It was finally released on westbound train Q101 out of Edmonton yesterday.

1. Q101, with CN 2238 leading the way, tips over at Acheson on the way down to the single track at Spruce Grove on CN's Edson Sub.

2. There is a prominent carbody and radiator difference between the CN ES44 and the Tier 4 ES44.

3. GECX 2036 rear view.

Also known are 2035 & 2039 so I wonder if CN has 5 (2035-2039) ?

In designing new ocean tugs with this engine in them, it is noteworthy that the exhaust is on what we consider the forward end of the engine, while the generator or reduction gear is on the opposite end.

The engine has a massive amount of added piping, being an EGR type diesel, but it does eliminate the need for aftertreatment equipment. That is a space-saver in a boat like an ocean tug.

We have three goats under design with them....we'll see how it goes. The forward exhaust is very inconvenient in a boat.

We will make it work.....
