Two sets of GP9's working Lachine IMS in 2008
Author: Mberry

While there are only a handful of CP GP9's still in service (none left in Montreal as far as I know), they were once extremely common systemwide. Witness these two shots of not one, but two sets of GP9's working Lachine IMS (CP's intermodal yard in Lachine, Qc) simultaneously in February 2008. The first shot shows CP 1608 & CP 1604, the second and third shot shows CP 1519 & CP 1577.

Extremely common right up to 2 years ago. Seemed overnight that the 2200s came in an placed them into the dead lines. Running them was like taking a step back in time, many of them had 50 years of use and abuse under their belts, and seemingly no two behaved exactly the same. Some got "modernized" by having the interior roof sprayed with what appeared to be pickup truck bedliner protector that strangely smelled like wet dog chow. Others got upgraded control stands, Q-tron systems, alerter buttons etc, but there were a few that remained very archaic right up to the end with dead man pedals, sea foam green interiors and horns down by your knees in the cab.
