The CN St-Hyacinthe sub seen from an AMT cab car
Author: Mberry

Last Friday, I took AMT 813 from Mont-St-Hilaire to Montreal's Central Station. All these shots were taken from the front window in the cab car of the train. The train takes CN's St-Hyacinthe sub the whole way.

1-Approaching the Richelieu RIver.

2-About to pass VIA 28, stopped in St-Basile-le-Grand.

3-About to pass CN 9410, switching the east end of Southwark yard.

4-Approaching St-Lambert Station, as passengers await the arrival of VIA 14 for Halifax.

5-Just past the St-Lamber Station, we see the Seaway diversion. When the St-Lawrence Seaway was built, CN insisted that their trains not be interrupted by ships. A 'diversion' was built so that if the bridge in the distance at right is raised for a boat, trains can take the diversion which rejoins the main line here.

6-Meeting VIA 14 on the Victoria Bridge.

7-Montreal end of the Victoria Bridge with the Pointe St-Charles yard in the background.

8-AMT's maintenance centre, with some old Vickers gallery cars stored alongside newer Bombardier multilevel cars.

9-Amtrak's northbound Adirondack deadheading back to the yard.

10-Over the Lachine Canal and approaching Wellington tower.

11-Approaching a curve, nearly at Central Station.

12-Central Station in sight.

Great images and splendid signals and rules seen. Been awhile since I've had to think about this stuff, hope I can get it right!!  Doug
image 3  rule 410 "clear to stop"  proceed prepared to stop at next signal.

image 7  rule 416 "medium to clear" proceed medium speed past signal and through turnouts.  As can be seen in the image the turnout is lined for the diverging route, the train will proceed at medium speed (not exceeding 30 mph) until it clears and then may proceed at track speed.

image 12 rule 427 "medium to stop", proceed at medium speed passing signal and turnouts, prepared to stop at next signal.

image 13 rule 439 "stop signal"  stop and by rule book there are other provisions with this rule.

also these rules maybe governed by timetable and other applicable special instructions.  Hope I passed the quiz!!!.

Fascinasting set of pictures! This "diversion" infrastructure must be pretty unique in the world. Since the two lift bridges span the ends of a lock, it's understandable why the two bridges need not ever be opened simultaneously. The diversion track looks well used. Very interesting! Thanks for posting.

PS: I'm confused about the MU train headed for Deux Montagnes - is the train headed into Gare Centrale to depart northward through the Mount Royal tunnel?

Thanks!

The train is actually headed south out of Central Station. I believe it will lay over just slightly south of the station.
