Laggan Sub - July 24
Author: KickingHorse

Just heading to work this morning and hear some strange calls on the road channel -

"Good for 60, Work 9765" .... "Good for 60"

"Good for 30, Work 9765" ... "Good for 30"

Reception from the conductor's handset was too good to be coming from Exshaw so I head towards downtown. The engineer starts answering some questions from the trainmaster ...

"It exploded just east of mile 73. There's oil and pistons and other parts on the ground."

Hmmmmmm ......

Well it turns out to be a westbound 603 potash train. Without enough power to make it into Banff and on to Massive, it is reversing all the way to Gap. (Canmore siding not big enough)

The tracks are still in the shadow of Grotto Mtn this early in the morning, 07:05, but here's the head end reversing past Cougar Creek and then past mile 65

Obviously it's the second unit, the 9828, that exploded.

Had to go east a little later, 09:30. Here's the 603 starting to pull midway in Gap siding with a new second unit, the 9735 (probably got it off an eastbound). It looks like they had just finished setting the blown up 9828 into storage track #2.

The mid-train remote passes the west storage track switch as the 603 pulls to the west end of Gap to wait for re-crew.
