Saskatchewan Adventure Part 2, ALCO's and elevators
Author: CP9300

After a successful afternoon of shooting on CP's Weyburn Sub, we headed back to Assiniboia for the evening. On our way we stopped in at Ogema, SK to see what was up with Southern Prairie/ Saturday Locomotive Services group. After scoping out the two former Wabush Lake Railway RS18s, we took note that the former Neptune Terminals ALCO T6 was not in sight. We continued our travels and stumbled across the missing engine at Glasnevin. After a brief chat with the mechanics tending to the burbling switcher, it was confirmed that the engine would be travelling west to Willows for the evening. So began, as a friend puts it, The Great T6 Chase of 2015.

1) Former Wabush Lake Railway ALCO RS18s rest in the shadow of the Ogema elevator.

2) Another view of the RS18s.

3) West of Glasnevin plodding along at an often lethargic 10 MPH.

4) Just after crossing Highway 13 east of Horizon.

5) Little engine across a big prairie.

6) Horizon,SK has a couple of preserved elevators. I had never seen a Federal elevator before this.

7) Another view of the Horizon elevators. The Southern Prairie tourist train from Ogema turns here at Horizon for the return trip.

8) A new setting for the former port switcher as it passes through the fields of bloomed canola.

9) Prairie workhorses.

10) Shadows await the faltering switcher.

11) The engineer/mechanic had stopped a number of times by this point and it was evident by the reduced speed and open hood doors that there were mechanical difficulties.

12) The little switcher finally sputtered and coughed to a dead stop in the shadow of the Viceroy elevator. The mechanic grumbled something about waiting for new filters to show up. We gave up here as the shadows were winning.

It was a great evening to follow the little ALCO with some nice elevators thrown in for good measure. More to follow.

Cheers, A.J.

Love the T-6 chase.  Those are great shots.  The RS-18 shots are a sad reminder of the decline in Quebec's iron ore business.

I like the Prairie Skyscraper Elevator Shots. Not near enough coverage  of them.

Very good photos. Photo Number 5 caused my imagination to jump into high gear with the lonely engine working its way across the prarie. Where did it come from? Where is it going?

Thank you.

I think that was the most enjoyable chase of light power I've ever done. I just wish the Alco would have died about 20 feet furthur down the rails so it would be in the sun at Viceroy!

I couldn't have said it better Trevor. The sun, the conditions, the scenery, everything was perfect for chasing this little workhorse across the prairies. Thank you to everyone for all the compliments. I am as glad to have these pictures shared as I was to capture them.
