NS GP59 in Montreal
Author: kgmontreal

The daily NS freight from Enola to CN's Taschereau Yard in Montreal is often powered by a pair of "Catfish".  But not today.  Instead it was led by an NS GP59 that somehow escaped local service south of the Mason-Dixon line.  Only 36 GP59 units were produced and ultimately NS owned them all.  It was a surprise to find one in the province of Quebec.

NS 4629 was the unit assigned on Monday Aug 24 as the pilot locomotive to lead the deadhead move of NKP 765 and passenger cars from Bethlehem, PA to Steamtown in Scranton, PA.  CP required a diesel pilot for the ferry moves of the NKP 765 over its lines, thus NS pressed the 4629 into this duty.  Interesting that after its pilot duties it led to Montreal as its generally in local service out of Allentown, PA.  Quite a week for this unique diesel !
