F-unit Friday CP in Maine
Author: kgmontreal

At Kyleton, Maine a westbound CP Rail freight makes a meet with the wayfreight in the fall of 1971.  The leading unit on the freight, FP7 #4074, is trailed by a B&M B-unit (either leased or running off miles) and an MLW RS-10.

We had made the trek to the wilds of Maine to photograph a CP CLC H16-44 operating on a rail grinding train.  Normally assigned to Nelson, BC and rarely seen east of Calgary, the H-Line had travelled across the continent with the rail grinder.  The unit was equipped with slow speed control making it vital for rail grinding.  The H-Line is shown waiting in the clear at Jackman for a meet with an eastbound freight.

A similar event occurred in 1974 when a pair of H-Lines operated in grinder service around Montreal.  While one unit was on the train, a second H-Line operated as a protection unit on local freights in the same area.  It could be called upon to substitute on a moment's notice.

Wow, an F-M (sorry, CLC) in Maine! Two of 'em, no less. Who'da thunk it?

And they put a real pretty one on the grinding train too!  Well, rail grinders make a mess anyway!
A pretty amazing event, a CP CLC in Maine!  Thanks for sharing!

Very cool shots. Interesting how from that angle the B&M unit almost looks like a VIA Rail unit!
