Exterior "Flood Lights" on The Canadian Dome Cars in 1970's?
Author: Streamliner

A friend of mine is constantly talking about this, so I thought I would ask the experts here:  He says that back in the pre-VIA days, on The Canadian, that there were exterior floodlights on the dome cars, that lit up the scenery at night, to give the passengers a better view.  Sounds a bit crazy to me, but then this friend of mine is a bit wacko.  Can anyone here shed any light on this?  Pun intended.  Thanks!

There were oscillating searchlights on the roofs of CP's FP9A units for that purpose.  But on the dome cars.........never in my experience.

I think that the B&O had spotlights on their dome cars at one time.

CN leased some B&O dome cars in 1966-67 and operated them west of Edmonton on the "Super Continental". I have a picture of "Starlight Dome" near Wabumun AB, complete with spotlights.

Based on the B&O comments, I did a search and came up with these photos.

I wonder what happens if the scenery is on the other side?

You don't see it. Simple.

From a family vacation in 1966, Kodakcromes from 50 years ago.

Leased B&O domes on the CN in the west.

I recall they were added to westbounds at Edmonton.

The first image was taken along Highway 16 somewhere near Edson AB., and the other is in the yard at Jasper AB.

The spotlights are clearly visible. What I don't know is whether CN used them.

I rode one on the Real Capitol Limited.

I didn't use it, but back then it also had a movie (as in theater movies) car.

At the time, another of the trains (don't remember which) had auto racks - the precursor to Auto Train.

So interesting to see the history of the Budd Strata Domes.  After their season on the CN they ultimately went to their home on the Seaboard Coast Line until Amtrak.  I find it wild one could have ridden these in Western Canada one summer and the next taken one out of Miami!  Wow!
