How is The Canadian doing this summer?
Author: stuporchief

Just wondering if someone (DrawingroomA?) could provide a report on how The Canadian is performing this summer. On-time performance? Prestige Class load factor? Etc.?

The on time and even early arrivals into Toronto that were frequent in spring are no more, but the delays have not been as bad as the past few years.  An hour and a half is fairly common, occasionally a bit longer. Arrivals into Vancouver are mostly on time or close to it.

It is impossible to get an accurate count of available space because Reservia allows a search for only six passengers which, of course, means six berths and roomettes, but a maximum of three double bedrooms, three Prestige rooms and two drawing rooms (cabins for 3) can be checked.  If the system shows fewer than six then that is fine, but if it says six are available it could be a lot more.  Last night's (July 19) departure of #1 from Toronto had some berths, no roomettes, and one double bedroom and one Prestige room.  Tomorrow's (July 21) departure of #1 is sold out in Prestige. But there have been several trains where three or more have been available. A station attendant friend says Prestige is doing very well, even though it is not always sold out.

The consists that I have seen in Toronto have had at least 12 sleepers and sometimes up to 17.  The non-Prestige Chateau sleepers, although placed mid-train, are often deadhead one way in or out of Toronto, but in service from Jasper to Vancouver.  It appears VIA is no longer setting off sleepers in Jasper.  I saw one departure about two weeks ago with five deadhead Chateau sleepers.  Because of their position it seemed unlikely that any passenger would have to traipse through them to get to their assigned diner.  Tuesday's arrival of #2 had two in-service Chateau sleepers.
