CP lines split at Glenwood, MN
Author: Alexmarissa

I understand that a Canadian Pacific mainline (former Soo Line?) splits at Glenwood, Minnesota.  One line goes straight north towards Thief River Falls, and the other line goes northwest thru North Dakota towards Portal.  Can anyone please provide information on the train traffic on these lines?  What is the number of trains, types, etc going toward Thief River Falls?  And number of trains, types, etc toward Portal?  Thanks in advance for any info you can provide!

North from Glenwood is the Detroit Lakes Subdivision which sees one through freight per day in each direction plus a local. West from Glenwood is the Elbow Lake Subdivision which sees 14 - 16 trains per day plus locals, unit grain trains, unit oil trains, unit Potash trains. Figure about 16 to 17 trains per day depending on location. There is one pair of Intermodal trains over the line to Portal. Westbound Manifests will frequently contain large blocks of grain empties, CP(Soo Line) still moves large amounts of grain in less than unit train quantities particularly towards Eastern Destinations. Westbound Grain is almost all moved in Unit trains and bridges from Portal, ND and reenters the USA at Kingsgate (UP Interchange) for Portland and Kalama.
