Trip on the Canadian. As viewed from the dome!
Author: rrpreservation

We caught the Canadian in Winnipeg on October 15th and rode to Vancouver, arriving on the 17th. It was a beautiful trip. Particularly enjoyable was the change in scenery. Since I spent time in the dome, my photos were from there.

1) Outside of Winnipeg, we travel through the Plains.

2) As we gain elevation, we see a light dusting.

3) West of Jasper

We had rain near and in Vancouver (no surprise).

Nice shots.  However a small correction.  In Canada they are not referred to as the plains but The Prairies.

Cheers.

Thanks!

The train was 19 cars long! Many of you probably already know it had 2 dining cars, and there were 3 Skyline cars. I counted only two coaches though.

The prairies are best viewed at night time - ala the pre-2010 schedule of the Canadian! Schedule westbiound between Edmonton and Vancouver largerly remains intact except for some cushioning that's been added. Arrival into Jasper was typically right after lunch, but the arrival into Vancouver could be as early as 6 am when the pre-2010 schedule was in place. The train really moved through the Fraser River Canyon after the CP and CN came to an agreement for directional traffic.

True that. Sit in the dome at night, see some distance searchlight signal and watch as you speed past it. When I rode in 2008 we even overtook a doublestack freight west of Winnipeg but before Melville.
