Pleasant Surprise - QNS&L 214
Author: refarkas

In my trips to Toronto, I can't recall another QNS&L locomotive. Here is QNS&L 214 on August 8, 1985 at the CP engine facility.

CP bought QNSL 204-218 in late 1983.  They became CP 5400-5414 over the following three years, the last couple becoming red in mid-1986 iirc.

All are long gone now.

Great photo. Super looking fuel tank.

Bill, when you say long gone, do you mean they were cut up and scrapped, or just moved to another railroad or leaser?

Five went to DME and ended up back within the CP family, some of them still in CP paint !
A few went to NRE as leasers.
Some went for scrap, and by now the DME/CP returnees have been sold and probably scrapped.

Also note QNSL 204-205 (CP 5400-5401) did not have the large fuel tanks like QNSL 206-218 (CP 5402-5414).

The ones that went to DME (some if not all) had the fuel tanks replaced with normal ones.  That looked odd because the air tanks were still in the long hood so it left an odd gap above the replacement fuel tanks.

QNS&L certainly had some of the more unique SD40 s / SD40-2 s in existence. Nice shot!

With all the second-handers, CP had a pretty interesting SD40/-2 roster. The ex-QNSL's were among my favorites.

Thanks for the information. With the tank, the snow shields, and the grimy weathering, this engine looks just great. A real candidate for modelling, for those of us of that persuasion. Ithink I have some NRE decals tucked away somewhere.

The QNSL's were favourites of mine too, partly because they could lead before they became CP units.

Everything else was trail-only until it was at least re-lettered and re-numbered for CP, although many were still KCS-white and UP-yellow as CP units.
