MLW Monday - CP 4744 at the Falls
Author: feclark

Here's CP 4744, the one and only M640, on the head end of First 949 (note the green flags) leaving Smiths Falls, headed up the Chalk River Sub. Still in 5" stripes, the fresh paint on the long hood doors betrays a fire that occurred some time between June and November 1977. A long hood singed by flames, and the big radiator wings, presage the younger GEs, n'est-ce pas? The trailer, providing most of the smoke, is M630 4556; the time is 1545, the date July 27, 1978. The two foreground tracks are CP's Belleville Sub, and the short bridges pass over CN's line from Ottawa via Smiths Falls to Napanee, east of Kingston on CN's Kingston Sub. Some week I'll post up a CN freight headed underneath. This is well before its conversion to AC traction and A1A configuration.

Good shot of the M-640.  It had quite a life and is now on display at Exporail.  Just look at the number of crossarms and wires on that pole line!
