At the time of construction in 1872, Riviere du Loup was the western terminal of the Intercolonial Railway. It made an end to end connection with the Grand Trunk.

By the 1890's, the Intercolonial was extended west to a junction with the GTR south of Montreal.

The GTR from Riviere du Loup to Levis QC was transferred to the ICR.

Profitability eluded the Intercolonial, and it was the first Canadian railway taken over by the Government as the Canadian Government Railway.

The CN station at Riviere du Loup in your picture is a modern building, looks like from the 1950's. I wonder if the building it replaced was an ICR station or GT?

There was a very old enginehouse at Riviere du Loup. Logically before the ICR was extended, there would have been a change of motive power at Riviere du Loup between the ICR and GT.

Time out, this is amazing.

So there were two railroad lines between Riviere du Loup and Charny? Which one survived, and which one was abandoned? Where was the abandoned line relative to the existing line?

Thanks in advance,

Rob L.

No, the GTR from Charny to Riviere du Loup was transferred to the ICR.

OK, thanks. How about west from Charny? Was that transferred to ICR as well? Or was there joint track for a ways west? How far west?

TIA,

Rob L.

From 1872 to 1899, the ICR ran on GTR trackage rights from Riviere du Loup  to Levis, where traffic was handed over to the GTR to Montreal.

In 1899, the ICR purchased the Drummond County Railway, and completed a link in through to Levis from Manseau.  The ICR then ran to St.Rosalie Junction, south of Montreal.
From St.Rosalie to Montreal, the ICR ran on the GTR

The former GTR route to Levis was abandoned east of Richmond QC in 1989
