The first image is just west of Jasper, during the double tracking project of the 1980's, and is taken from the Yellowhead Highway. There were a couple of rock bluffs where the highway climbed up the south side of the valley which provided good look down shots of the Albreda Subdivision of the CN. This one is near the former siding and current crossovers at Giekie AB.

Highway and railway projects of the 1970's and 80's opened up these locations, however they have become much more difficult as trees have grown up.

Highway 16 is built on or near  the right of way of the Canadian Northern west of Jasper, however the Giekie rock bluff has gradients and curvature too steep and sharp for a former railway grade and perhaps the GTP and CNor shared a right of way on the valley floor.

Tracking the former rail grades is also made more complex west of Jasper due to the construction of a pipeline through the pass in the 1950's which also used portions of former rail grades. The berm over a buried pipeline is often very similar to an old rail grade.

I'm enjoying these images of western Canada from Roger Puta's collection.

A bit grumpy today Bill?   Mr. Bernard  has a collection from a photographer who is no longer with us which he is trying to organize.   No better place to come for info than TO especially here on the underutilized Canadian board when dealing with photos taken north of the border.

April Wine released their album "Power play" in 1982, same year as these photos.

Viewing is optional. If you've had enough, don't open the thread.
