MLW Monday - Shiny Six-Axle Trio on a CP Caboose Hop
Author: feclark

Looking at this shot a while ago, I didn't quite twig to what was unusual until I realized there are three big C/M units, all clean and shiny. This is a WB cab hop near Mount Pleasant (I think; east of Yonge St.) in Toronto, at 1932 on June 21, 1977. This was the period when CP was repainting into 8" stripes, none on the cab face, which accounts, I'm sure, for there being three clean units, 4502, 4500, and 4734.

Wow! Between KG's C-424's and this shot, it's been a good Monday!

4502 never looked so good.  Nice shot.

I don't think the location is correct based on the bridge in the background

Are you referring to the structure at the right? Not a bridge.

Indeed not a bridge. When I got to Toronto in the late 70s, I worked with TTC to get around. I took the subway up St. George St., if memory serves me correctly, and got off just south of Dupont. That was track access. I typically walked east from there, past Davenport. This shot is almost certainly (the memory fades) just east of the nifty old station [?] with distinctive tower on Yonge St. that got renovated for LCBO decades later; I have it in the background of a few photos I took. The curve in the background of this photo shows up on this location in Google satellite, as does the triangular area that allows you to step back a bit from the tracks on the north side. Looking at Google, I didn't spot the Mount Pleasant label, so I have no idea why that location came to mind. Sorry if the grey cells are shutting down, and any correction from anyone would be welcome.

Ken,
Thanks, but surely it must have looked better when it was fresh out of MLW in Script livery!

The nifty old station was CP's North Toronto station, for many years a liquor store.
