Why railwaymen hate winter - part 2
Author: Mberry

More reasons for railwaymen to hate winter from yesterday's snowstorm in Montreal. AMT 86 pushes some snow aside as it approaches Lasalle Station during a snowstorm in the first two shots and then leaving in the third. Barely visible in the background is CP's bridge over the St. Lawrence River.

Great looking shots, also like the color scheme of the train.

A horn and a spare. Canadian law requires a locomotive to have an operating horn, and this must be proved by testing the horn before the locomotive enters service. Any train that has been stabled overnight at the outer end of its daily run therefore must have its horn tested before departing on its first run of the day -- unless a spare horn is available for use. Earlier posters have pointed out that horn testing at around 5:00 AM has proved to be highly unpopular with neighbours around the outer suburban stations, hence AMT specifies two horns, so that they would  be allowed to forego the horn test. To be honest, I'm not sure how the regulators could be sure that, if one horn is plugged with snow, the other horn sitting right beside it would not also be plugged; but then, I didn't write the rules...
