Canadian Railroads > Ethanol, New York-bound

Running roughly once every two days through Ontario and Quebec on CP tracks on its way to Albany, NY, ethanol train CP 650 or empty counterpart CP 651 is generally the only freight train that you might see on CP's Adirondack Sub through Lasalle, Qc in daylight. One ran today, passing through Lasalle Station just before noon on a gorgeous winter day. Power was CP 9640 up front and CEFX 1058 on the tail end.

1-Rounding a bend near the small and empty Lasalle Yard.

2-Passing the platform at the station.

3-Crossing the St. Lawrence River, with a high green at Seaway in the distance.

4-A few of the cars were white (maybe off yellow?), first time I see this on this train, which I've always seen with 100% black cars.

5&6-The DPU bringing up the rear.

There'd be precious little traffic on the north end of the D&H without those ethanol trains.

Is this the north end of the CP train exchanged to CSX at Albany  which ends  at Tremley Point in Linden NJ?

I'm not completely sure, but I believe this train terminates in Albany.

Great photos of the train bravo! I had to ask, was there there a crew in the 1058 locomotive?
I ask simply becuase the locomotives lights were off then turned on- unless from the angle
of the photo the lit headlight bulbs were not visible and apearred to be off?

Would a FRED be used in a consist like this if the headlights were off?

The headlight must have been on in the wide shot of the DPU, there is no reason for a crew to be in the DP unit.

If the train is destined to, or travels in the USA, the headlight must be on dim
if the train is equipped with a tail-end remote.
Serves as a marker in place of an SBU.

I never noticed that, the DPU on another 650 that I shot at the same location (second shot in the below post) also has the headlight on. At this location the train is about an hour away from the US border at Rouses Point.
