Regular Steam in Bosnia
Author: CNStratford

In February the German group Plandampf organized a winter steam excursion to Bosnia where 2-10-0 steam locomotives work regularly pulling coal trains. The exciting attached video resulted.

Excellent video. I gather that the men throwing lumps of coal off the train are stealing it for their own use.

Here's two more Bosnia steam videos:
German-built 2-10-0 works loaded & empty coal trains in Bosnia. Diesel is an EMD G16.
Excellent sound, the 2-10-0 is great at about 6:20.

Note the hand signals are completely different that in North America.

More here 2-10-0 & G16 action here.

I think all the "big" steam is now (2014) gone from Bosia. Does anyone know for sure?

I love it. I'm going to Bosnia, looks like a great place to visit. That and the food, and everything else. Thanks for sharing, great video!

This is too funny! Edited: what I meant to say was the videographer yelling at the coal throwers was funny but clearly the destitution that leads to this necessity isn't at all humorous. Unfortunately, for many generations, impoverished people around the world have picked up coal along RR RoWs for heat. My bad...

How come the wayside signal didn't change aspect?

I wondered the same thing about the signals.

Presumably the signal operator hadn't got round to reversing the lever.

I am the only one appalled at the amount of poverty that must exist in that country for scores of people to risk their lives stealing pitiful small amounts of coal from a moving freight train? Coal costs something like $70 a ton in the US -- about three and one half cents a pound. Aside from the potential problems killing yourself and getting shot by the police, just how much could someone make from hoping a freight with a sack and grabbing as much coal as they can. . . .$1.50???

I had the same thought about the desperation of stealing coal from a moving train. How grim their poverty must be.
