European Railroad Discussion > More from the right side of the Rhine on Sunday (30 MarDate: 03/30/14 12:04 More from the right side of the Rhine on Sunday (30 Mar Author: DocJohn First stop on current European trip after picking up rental car at Frankfurt Airport was Lauterbach (Hessen). Arrive just in time to see one of the locsal trains that runs between Giessen and Fulda. Those boarding the train appeared to be going to Fulda to transfer to the ICEs for travel to other parts of Germany. There is still a manned tower at Lauterbach, but all evidence of freight service seems to have vanished. Branch line heading south from Lauterbach was abandoned some time ago and is now a bike trail.

It was a short walk to the Rhine River to watch the river barge traffic and the rail lines. Lots of freights to see. The rail line was electrified but diesels ran through also. Did I have a decent camera then? Nooooooo, dang it! Sandhofen was the little town next to the Cassern. Neat little German town. West Germany at that time.
