June evening at King's Sutton
Author: 86235

On Wednesday I went out to King's Sutton on the former GW mainline from London to Birmingham, now populated by Chiltern's London Marylebone to Birmingham, FGW Oxford to Banbury and Cross Country's Bournemouth to North West England and Scotland's passenger trains and DBS and Freightliner freight services. Lots of trains and a lovely location.

OK, the first picture was taken on the Chiltern mainline south of King's Sutton, 67018 at the rear of the 15:55 Birmingham to London Marylebone entering Brill Tunnel.

The same trainset with the same locomotive on the 18:15 Marylebone to Kidderminster.

Later in the evening 66232 passes King's Sutton heads north on DBS 4E70 Southampton to Wakefield Europort

Is there a knuckle coupler on that engine?

You can't fail, it such a superb train watching spot. Next it will be the 68s.
Here's a comparison I made, with the floods of early this year. chris uk

Yes, all 66/0s have them

The ground remains soft in the water meadows, the grass is almost up to shoulder height in places!

Can that location be reached without a car? Seems like a gorgeous spot.

Yes, King's Sutton has a station with regular services to Banbury, Oxford and London Marylebone, the station is behind the trees on the right, then it's a 10 minute walk across the water meadows.

Marvelous!

Now I know how my son and I will spend our last day in-country before heading home.

This link will take you to the Ordnance Survey Landranger map for Kings Sutton

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=449829&y=236221&z=120&sv=kings+sutton&st=3&tl=Map+of+Kings+Sutton,+Northamptonshire+[Town]&searchp=ids.srf&mapp=map.srf

The red dotted lines which parallel the railway north of the station firstly on the right and then on the left of the railway are public footpaths, public rights of way across private land and are equipped with kissing gates and stiles between fields. The bridge from which the pictures were taken is that of the road between Kings Sutton and Adderbury. The big blue line is the M40 motorway, the sound of which unfortunately is ever present :-(

Ok, I need a translation. What is a kissing gate?

Is there likely to be much freight traffic on a Sunday or is that mostly on weekdays?

A kissing gate is one which allows one person through at a time. There are no freight trains scheduled through Kings Sutton on a Sunday.
