Mid Summers Day
Author: 86235

Risking an international incident on the definition of summer but here are three pictures I took yesterday, on Mid Summer's Day. I was in Wiltshire staying with my in laws so took the opportunity to get up very early to see the sun rise, not at Stonehenge or Avebury where 30,000 plus gathered, but at Little Bedwyn where the Berks and Hants (the mainline to South West England) and the Kennett and Avon canal bisect the village.

The first picture, taken at just after 4:45 a.m. of the lock on the canal and the railway on the left.

18 minutes later, and running about 45 minutes early, 60065on the 6A11 Robeston to Theale oil tanks. The 60 could be heard for a few minutes in the quiet of a rural dawn.

Before going back for breakfast I drove a few miles west to Wootton Rivers for the 6M20 Whatley Quarry to St Pancras stone terminal which passed at 07:10.

I went out later in the day for a few more pictures near Swindon, Bristol and in South Wales. http://nick86235.smugmug.com/Trains/2014/Summer-2014/i-v6gwvBP

Nice selection - gets light too early over there! I especially like the image of the canal and locks with the still water...

Great pix.

And as for the use of "Midsummer's Night" as the night of the solstice, I think Mr. Shakespeare established that word usage some time back.
