Here in the UK we had Woodhams http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodham_Brothers in South Wales from where more than 200 locomotives were saved. Most current locos seem to go to http://www.boothsmetals-doncaster.co.uk/ but, of course they aren't steam.

If you are looking for a specific part and have something else to offer as a swap there may be a deal to be done. I know there are some USRA locos here but I can't remember where.

There are several places you might try. Here are a couple to start you off.

The Keighley and Worth Valley have one which was returned to service either last year or earlier this. They painted it in an ersatz BR black and gave it a fictitious number. Very nice it looked too.

Then I remembered one I'd seen at Merehead (a quarry, not a preserved railway) and I figured there would be some pictures/videos which would identify it and I proceeded from there to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USATC_S160_Class#Preservation where there's a list of locos in various places.

Not sure where you are located but do a search of the term "metal spinning" and you should be able to come up with a firm that can do at least the majority of the fabrication for the door. I am assuming you will at some point be able to take the critical dimensions from an extant survivor. PM me if I can be of any help.

Europe: Steam Locomotives in Scrap Yards

Only today did I read your post. Several friends in the UK were queried. Replies follow:

"It's a very long time since locos were scrapped here (UK). The last locos left Woodham's yard at Barry maybe 15 or so years ago. Almost all the 200+ locos which passed through it since the mid-1960's were rescued although quite a number haven't yet been restored."

"I think the message may be referring to Poland where locos have been scrapped, or at least threatened with scrapping, quite recently. There are large numbers of stored locos in the country which probably don't stand any chance of restoration, at least not for many years. Can't think of anywhere else in Europe where this is the case unless you include Russia which also has large numbers of locos which aren't really regarded as preserved." - James

"If I remember correctly, some in Turkey, maybe also Greece still. . . Not sure about the areas of former Russian influence. Russia itself has a mass of derelict steam." - Rob

"My feeling is that in UK there are no more derelict locos waiting restoration. . ."

"I would guess that the people who restored the S160 at the Churnet Valley Railway would know what spares or derelict S160s survive in Poland, China and Hungary, for instance. The last time I was at the Churnet Valley Railway to see the S160 I spoke to one of the enginemen and was told they had a full set of drawings – presumably from the USA. And I would guess some of their people had been to countries where these engines had worked looking for spares." - Ted (1)

"There are a few S160s in the UK and up to quite recently there was one up on the NYMR which has been waiting to be restored back to working order, but was in a bit of a state of disrepair and I think has now left the railway. KWVR have just got their S160 back into traffic. A few years ago I did the Trans Siberian and we passed through a depot in the Urals called Zlatoust where they serviced their strategic reserve steam locomotives, but I fear they may have all gone for scrap now. Poland may still have a good stock of spares! and China." - Ted (2)

"For the UK I think the last locos that were in Woodhams went to the abortive Barry Railway project, at least one has been used to facilitate a new build. There is also a scrap yard that has, I think, two industrial locomotives still."

"For Europe clearly Bulgaria has dumps likewise Finland. There is a dump in Germany but I've never found out where it is.

"As seen by the new build and restoration projects in the UK, I do not think there is anything that cannot be built."

"Museum locos can, however, get scrapped – it happened in Belgium recently so don't discount it."

"As for dumps perhaps the largest are in Greece (where I recall steam never officially finished?)."

"Perhaps Russia has stuff salted-away." - Ken
