Grade crossing protection Russian style
Author: GettingShort

All along the Trans-Siberian route older grade crossing shanties are being replaced with these rather grand buildings. The crossing protection itself will stop anything, no simple old-timey pretend railroading gates, with little flashing lights here.

I guess you could call that positive protection. The new "shanty" is more elaborate than most Amtrak stations.

And this type of grade protection can't be done here because? Oh wait. I forgot. We have lawyers. A driver running in to one of the would probably sue for damage to his vehicle! And yes, Amtrak could use a few rural stations as large and nice as that!

It can't be done here, who would pay for this sort of thing and remember these crossings are staffed, 24/7. The Russian government spends a lot of money on the RZD some years it's been as much and often more than what they spend on the military. chs7-321 could probably offer some insight on this but I suspect the railway and it's employees are important political supporters of President Putin.

I think he was talking about the road "anticlimber". Those are not THAT expensive.......

When I saw the thread title I had visions of a T-72 tank "guarding" the crossing!

For the money spent to build this elaborate crossing protection and building and the annual 24/7 cost to staff it and maintain it, one would think a grade separation would be cheaper.

But that would not create lifetime jobs for the comrades.

The problem with that pavement anticlimber is it will trap a truck that is in between the gates.

All that money put to this kind of show off! Think if the capital was put to real development, we would really need more developing countries in the World wouldn't we. To me it has always been a mystery why Russians employ people to nonproductive work, like triple security checks at some airports, or the 24/7 staffing here instead of easy and cheap automation.
