A day out for the oldies
Author: 86235

In one case the very, very oldies. The second weekend of the 150th anniversary of the Hammersmith and City Line of London Underground saw 1896 built Metropolitan E class 0-4-4T no.1 with its vintage train of Metropolitan Railway stock (nothing younger than 114 years old), tailed by 1923 built Metro Vick electric Sarah Siddons. Here's the first outward run approaching Farringdon. It was running a bit late thanks to a signal failure at Aldgate East which was disrupting normal Hammersmith & City and Circle Line operations.

Later in the morning the 6V62 Tilbury to Llanwern empty steel was hauled by almost 40 year old class 56s 56113 and 56087, the picture was taken at West Hampstead on the London Overground

And finally 41 year old 87002 Royal Sovereign speeding through Alexandra Palace on the East Coast Mainline on the 17:18 GBRf staff charter returning to Newcastle.

It's been a really good day.

Yes, and that's excluding another vintage machine - 86259 Les Ross - which is preserved in early 1960s electric blue which was on an Edinburgh to London 'Ride London' railtour (there was a cyling festival in London all weekend) which also arrived in King's Cross. Unfortunately I chose the wrong platform at King's Cross on which to wait and my picture was rubbish :-)

Thank you Nick for sharing all these great pictures here and on your Smugmug site! "James Herriot" could not look better than from this angle. What and interesting design for a multiple unit...this almost reminds me of the MUs in the early dieselization days when design was part of their enthrallment.

What is that GBRF is transporting in all those small containers?

The containers carry gypsum from flue gas de-sulpherisation plants at coal fired generating stations.
