European Railroad Discussion > Around LondonDate: 08/23/14 11:57 Around London Author: 86235 On Monday the 1M16 Caledonian Sleeper passing Harringay on time at 07:20. For three weekends in August the sleepers are diverted off their normal Anglo Scottish route on to the East Coast Mainline.
Earlier today Chiltern's 13:37 Stratford on Avon to Marylebone crossing the West Coast Mainline at South Hampstead, prior to enetering St Johns Wood Tunnel. And then finally this evening another diverted train, the 4O57 Hams Hall to Domodossola passing Alexandra Palace on the East Coast Mainline (and a stone's throw from home). Date: 08/24/14 02:14 Re: Around London Author: 55002 Three crackers, Nik. I looked on google earth for your pic at Hampstead and amazed you could get to this tunnel. I may look here on my next cycle ride into London. What looks to be an old railway viaduct on the right, seems to be part of a main road. Chris uk
Date: 08/24/14 03:39 Re: Around London Author: 86235 Thanks. That shot isn't really possible without steps. It's a strange location, the parapet is separated from Alexandra Road by a small plot of land into which there used to be a gate from the road, which is bricked up. So I climbed over the wall into the enclosure, and took the picture over the parapet of the tunnel.
I really want a later afternoon shot from the opposite side but the ivy growth requires a year's supply of Agent Orange to eradicate. Edited 4 time(s). Last edit at 08/24/14 03:51 by 86235. Date: 08/24/14 09:40 Re: Around London Author: GettingShort Nice collection, thanks!

Is it common for DB Schenker UK to provide the traction for the Caledonian? Date: 08/24/14 11:04 Re: Around London Author: McKey Great pics Nick! I especially enjoyed the DB red class 90 in the curve with a sleeper set.
How fast are they allowed to run outside urban areas? Date: 08/24/14 12:07 Re: Around London Author: 86235 McKey Wrote:

For the comfort of the clients the Anglo Scottish sleepers are scheduled at no more than 85 mph (140 kph) but on occasions, when making up lost time they are authorised to 100 mph (160 kph). At that particular location the speed limit on the fast lines is 95 mph (150 kph). DBS 90s are restricted to 100 mph but when they were used in intensive passenger service by Virgin West Coast they were allowed 110 mph (176 kph) Edited 1 time(s). I'm wondering if U.K. is one of the countries where overnight expresses are in jeopardy? Date: 08/25/14 20:17 Re: Around London Author: 86235 There are only three, the two Anglo Scottish services and the Night Riviera to SW England. None are in immediate danger, indeed the Anglo Scottish trains are to get new equipment from the new franchisee, Servo.
