Tegernseebahn Bavaria 1973
Author: spflow

A short branch off the Munich - Lengries line in south Bavaria was (and still is) privately operated down to the lake resort of Tegernsee. For many years some coaches would be detached from the DB diesel hauled train, and taken down the branch by a 0-8-0 diesel-hydraulic. The older steam loco was brought out for weekly specials. These pictures date from July 1973.

I was at Tegernseebahn in October, 1985 for a steam special weekend. TAG 4, plus two visiting locomotives were in steam.

Great pictures from long ago, thanks for sharing! The Tegernseebahn AG as company ceased to exist, after they lost the traffic between Tegernsee and Schaftlach to the Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB) in 1996, providing only the right of way since then. The rolling stock was sold. In 2012, also the right of way was sold to the cities of Tegernsee and Gmund (45% each) and the county of Miesbach (10%), marking the end of the company. Today, the BOB runs DMU's between Tegernsee and Munich.

Then we most likely met there :-) Below are two pictures I took that day with the first one showing the guest locomotive 64 289 from the Eisenbahnfreunde Zollernbahn (EFZ) leading the train in front of the TAG 7 close to Schaftlach and the second one showing the second visiting locomotive, the J.A. Maffei, from the Bayerischer Localbahnverein (BLV) at Schaftlach station.

Fantastic stuff, thanks a lot! Are there ever any steam specials down the branch nowadays?

PS I named the junction incorrectly - it is of course Schaftlach not Holzkirchen. My memory is getting a bit foggy after 40 years!

Thanks! Yes, from time to time, there are steam trains running on the Tegernseebahn. The next ones are early December and early January. The 70 083 of the Bayerischer Localbahnverein (BLV) will be used for these trains, as the TAG 7 is not in a working condition right now (needs a new boiler).
