Planning a trip to Germany - have a few RR questions
Author: gherrig

Hi everybody,

Thank you for your advice on finding good values on airline fares a couple months ago. Now more specific plans are being made for myself and my 11-year old son (who is not particularly interested in trains). We are going to have a few days that are open to go anywhere in Germany we like, along with scheduled visits to Berlin and Bremen. I wanted to ask if you have any particular recommendations for rail routes to ride AND any Eisenbahn museums that are must-see. The trip will be at the end of March, which probably isn't the best time to catch an operating Dampflok in action however if there was anything out there I would love to catch it. Thanks in advance!

Take a Köln-Düsseldorfer Rhine trip from Koblenz to Bingen - you have high-density rail traffic on both sides of the river, lots of other river traffic, and really nice scenery and historic towns and castles all rolled into one.

The trip takes about six hours.

If you are into modeling, why not visit here too: http://www.miniatur-wunderland.de/

And Maschen yard in Hamburg has massive amounts of rolling stock to see.

Berlin Lichtenberg station might be an interesting spot for train spotting. Just be sure to have a teleobjective for you for best results. And be there during the busy hours. (maybe too much to consider all of a sudden).

Of course Berlin main station is a place many love and others hate, for obvious reasons.

I'm sure Berliners here find numerous other interesting places too...

In Berlin, try to see the German Museum of Technology (www.sdtb.de). A great static display with two rebuilt roundhouses housing numerous locomotives and passenger and freight cars. And on the last Sunday of the month, a visit there includes a steam-hauled trip of about 2 km to the museum's "depot", a warehouse of all the equipment that cannot be housed at the main museum site.

Wow! So many great ideas. Thank you very much TOers, we won't be able to do it all, but we'll have some great choices. Tschuss,

And for your son there are many other exhibits there also, machine shop, printing press, and so much more. Google it on the internet and take a peek.
