Author: 86235

Taken just over an hour ago on the Gospel Oak to Barking Line a Cathedrals Express from Southend to Bristol behind LNER 2-cylinder B1 class 4-6-0 61306, in its 1948 guise of LNER apple green but with its BR number and British Railways emblazoned on the tender. It was taking the traina s far as Southall in West London where it was due to give way to Southern Railway light pacific 34067 Tangmere for the remainder of the day. Tomorrow 61306 is due to take The Easterling from London King's Cross to Norwich and Lowestoft and back.

Excellent. How sad it is that in the U.K. they run mainline steam, often under wires, with NO diesel, and a proper matched consist on many weekends. But that we can't manage even one mainline steam trip in the U.S. without a mismatch of equipment and one or sometimes even two diesels tucked right in behind the steam loco. And God forbid if you open a vestibule window! A few years ago we chased the "Great Britain IV" all over Scotland and had a blast. We didn't see one diesel in the consist on the entire trip which included some pretty steep grades. Oh but wait. The loco isn't BLACK. The horror.

That is a beautiful shot. Looks like the railroad did some land clearing.

There was a diesel, privately preserved 47580 was on the back to act as thunderbird in the event either of the steam locos got into trouble and also to help turn the train once it got to Bristol. The diesel would have been at the head of the back up move to wye the train
