European Railroad Discussion > Estonia: Local Trains Now and Back ThenDate: 05/05/15 09:46 Estonia: Local Trains Now and Back Then Author: McKey I think it might be time for a little series on Nordic and Estonian local and regional commuter trains. Logical starting point after previous message might just be the Estonian rolling stock.
Currently Estonian passenger traffic is mainly handled by two FLIRT types: 1) Flirt EMUs handle the Tallinn local traffic on the electrified area, spanning some 50 kilometers West and 50 East of the city. On the Eastern end a logical electrification extension to Tapa junction is lining up for EU support. All traffic here runs on 5' gauge and 3300V DC current. This has now been totally modernized with EU support removing the old Soviet electrical systems. FLIRT1 EMUs are by far largest in Europe is you measure them by loading gauge. 3,5 meters width is simply huge! Recognition is easy: just look for the road number starting with 1. First three pictures here are FLIRT1 EMUs, all from Tallinn. Some pics by Hannu. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 05/05/15 09:48 by McKey. Here are three different views of these units in traffic. More pictures of ER2 can be found here: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?17,3732705 There is also an Estonian passenger trains page: http://www.4rail.net/reference_estonia_emus1.php Date: 05/05/15 09:56 Re: Estonia: Local Trains Now and Back Then Author: McKey Maybe you wish to see the evolution of some paint schemes of Er2 too, here are three last ones. I suppose these trains were born "Soviet green" like so many thing at the time.
