Harz Narrow Gauge - not to be missed
Author: JohnMcIvor

Just enjoyed a three day visit to the Harz Narrow Gauge Railway in Germany. An amaging metre gauge network with modern powerful 2-10-2 tank locos, a vintage 2-6-2T and ancient mallets. Lots of serious grades up to 3%, including the 1 hour 40 minute climb from Wernigerode (234 metres altitude) to Brocken (1125 metres) - Germany's answer to the climb to Cumbres!

yes i did it in november 14  we had a full load about 500 passengers and i think 8 or 9 cars

i was in the car a couple behind the locomotive and that driver/engineer had it full throttle most of the way  with a  wide open regulator

it sound like something much larger in size  the stack talk was incredible  slipped badly about hald a dozen times but recovered without much reduction in pace

Probalby the best steam system in the world. Not only a tourist railway. A daily service also used by locals for transportation. And mostly steam. Any steam enthusiast who has not been there doesn't know what they are missing. Photo is a double departure from Alexisbad.

You're correct in your assessment of this line...I hope to revisit someday.

Great review of the line!

I never noticed before it was indeed in _that_ Nordhausen where the V1 and V2 rocketry and nerve gas bombs were assembled underground by slave laborers...tens of thousands perished so it might be worth mentioning. Anyways you can visit both this macabre location with the beauty of Harz mountains at the same time!
