Criterium du Dauphine trains

Actually caught a few of them in Stage 8, sadly lost by Tejay today...

1. World time trial champion races the train

2. Peloton catches up with the end of a second train, I think....

3. Local fauna

Looks like you've got some class 36000 in your first picture?

Akiem (daughter company of SNCF) hires these to a number of French operators. Thello being just one of them.

Wasn't it the Criterium du Dauphine (apologies for lack of accents)?

Well, that's a relief -- I knew SNCF Fret had a surplus of locomotives, but I didn't think some had been converted to operate from 15 kV on the Gotthard....    The operation did have a Maurienne look to it.

The preserved steam locomotive near Modane is actually Italian, ex-FS 640 021, a 2-6-0.   During construction of the motorway the original* French portal was moved a few hundred meters and reconstructed block-by-block.

* The railway tunnel entry on the French side is not the original;  I believe a slightly different entry path had to be constructed due to rock instability near the original entry.  Correction or amplification welcomed !

Best, SZ

It was moved slightly to the East side and extended to to weak rock formation.
